Girls on the beach, huh? Nice.
You have two options:
1) Go prime. Buy a 50mm or 85mm lens. I'd go with the f/1.4 versions to allow the most light into your camera for indoor shooting. Primes are the best way to go for portrait work.
2) If you want more flexibility, consider the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G AF-S DX. It's fast and sharp, and is specifically suited for the cropped sensor of the D300.
Good luck! The best portrait lens for 800-1000 dollars for nikon d300 for portraits. crystal clear photos. full body?
Either the Nikkor 135mm f/2.8D AF-S macro lens, or the Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8D AF ED lens.
The 135mm will let you get really, really close in if you want (it has a reproduction ratio of 1:2 or so...and a focus distance of around two feet when set to macro.)
The 80-200mm will give you a lot of options to go with the focal length, and, in addition, keeps the f/2.8 all through its focal range.
The 135mm will run you around 500-600 dollars.
The 80-200mm will cost you between 700-1200 dollars depending on where you buy it. I'd suggest Amazon...www.amazon.com
